I'm a Dallas Fort Worth area Photographer who bends over backwards to serve contagiously positive college students, an educator to photographers who want to make an impact on the world with their images, and a Dog Dad to everyone's favorite photoshoot prop, Snoopy.
In the age of smartphones and lower priced mirrorless cameras, one question I hear a lot from photographers is: “Why would a grad hire me, when their friend is offering to take their photos for cheap… or even free?” While it’s true that almost everyone has a camera in their pocket these days, and many college students are pursuing photography with DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras at hobby level, I’m a big believer that there are PLENTY of reasons why professional photography, especially in the college and sorority scene, remains irreplaceable. Here’s a little of why I believe this to be true:
1. Professional Quality and Expertise
The most obvious difference between professional photographers and amateurs is the quality of the work. Professional photographers bring:
Technical Skills: We understand lighting, composition, and camera settings to create a photograph that stands out.
High-Quality Equipment: While smartphone cameras are improving, they still can’t match the quality of professional-grade cameras and lenses, especially in less-than-ideal lighting conditions.
Editing Expertise: Professional editing can transform a good photo into a great one. Your unique style, whether you’re light and airy, true to color, or dark and moody, is a skill that most “Friends with a Camera” typically do not possess.
2. Reliability and Experience
There’s nothing worse than for a college grad on shoot day than hearing their photographer say “Oh… I forgot/have a test/just broke up with my boyfriend. Could we maybe do this another day?” Hiring a professional like you means hiring reliability. Professionals:
Deliver Consistently: We provide a consistent level of quality and service, ensuring every shot captures the essence of the event or session.
Handle High-Pressure Situations: Think that “Friend with a Camera” is gonna know how to capture the go-to spot on Campus when there’s a hundred students running around, a drumline marching through the Quad, and inflatables are getting set up for an event that night? Heck no! But you will! Why? Because professionals like you are experienced in managing the dynamics of event photography (hello wedding day!), from navigating large groups to capturing key moments under pressure.
High Volume Experience: College photographers often have the opportunity to shoot signature locations on campus repeatedly, honing their skills and understanding of these settings. This experience makes them experts at capturing scenes that a student’s friends are often trying to photograph for the first or second time, ensuring professional results that stand out.
3. Investment in Memories
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts… College Students value meaningful experiences. Professional photography is an investment in high-quality memories. For many College & Sorority members:
Special Occasions Deserve Special Attention: Events like graduations, formals, and chapter photos are significant. They merit more than just casual snapshots; they deserve beautifully crafted images.
Legacy and Tradition: For Greek life especially, professional photos often become a part of the group’s legacy, passed down and cherished over the years.
4. Efficiency and Commitment
Lastly, hiring a professional photographer means having someone whose sole job is to capture the event:
Efficiency: Professionals are efficient and organized, dedicated to capturing a wide range of moments throughout the event without being distracted by the festivities.
Commitment: A professional will be committed to not only showing up for the session, but managing weather reschedules effectively, and delivering within their contracted window.
While it’s tempting to just let friends handle photography with their smartphones or cameras, professional photographers offer much more than just equipment. We bring expertise, reliability, artistic perspective, and a commitment to delivering high-quality images that celebrate and preserve life’s important moments. As professionals, we provide not just photos, but a service that adds value to these special occasions, ensuring they are remembered and treasured for years to come.
