I'm a Dallas Fort Worth area Photographer who bends over backwards to serve contagiously positive college students, an educator to photographers who want to make an impact on the world with their images, and a Dog Dad to everyone's favorite photoshoot prop, Snoopy.
Happy Monday Photographers! Now that the Super Bowl is behind us after last night’s Big Game, it’s time for every college photographer’s favorite season: GRAD SEASON. But…whether you’re a seasoned professional in the college scene or considering branching into this dynamic market, there’s one foundational principle you must understand: viewing this market as the “college grad market” is just the tip of the iceberg! sorority event photography is the iceberg. These events are not just about capturing images; they’re about capturing a mood, a moment, and the unique culture of Greek life… and marketing to your hundreds of ideal clients while you do it! Let’s explore the essentials of photographing Greek life events, from formals to philanthropy, and why these occasions are a gold mine of opportunity for those who want to be successful photographers!
1. Understanding the Greek Life Culture
Before you even take your camera out of its bag, it’s vital to understand the culture and traditions of the sorority or fraternity you are photographing: after all, as I’ve previously written, this market has it’s own language that you will want to master before diving in!. Each group may have its own unique rituals, symbols, and types of events. Researching and respecting these traditions will not only help you capture photos that resonate with the members but will also earn their trust and respect—opening doors to future gigs.
Talk to Leaders: Prior to the event, speak with chapter leaders to get insights into the day’s schedule and significant moments. Each event typically has a point person from the sorority’s exec team who is in charge!
Scout Locations: If possible, stop by the venue(s) the event will be taking place in so that you can plan your shots more effectively…. and know whether or not to bring your flash!
2. Preparation and Gear
Success in event photography, especially in vibrant and fast-paced environments like Greek life events, starts with preparation.
Backup Equipment: Always have backup gear ready. This includes extra batteries, memory cards, and even a second camera body if possible. I’ll never forget having to call another photographer in town to come bail me out with a backup battery one night at a formal event because my battery was dying… not my finest moment!
3. Candid or Plandid? How about BOTH!
Greek life events are bustling with energy. Capturing this essence requires a mix of candid and posed shots.
Candid Shots: These are the gold of Greek life photography. Capture laughs, dances, and candid interactions. These moments are often the most cherished as they reflect genuine emotions and interactions.
Formal Portraits: While candids tell the story, do not overlook the importance of formal portraits. Ensure you make time for a formal large group shot at each event, as well as one of the sorority exec! For Bid Day events, a pledge class group shot is also a must!
4. Dealing with Challenges
Photographing large groups in festive settings comes with its set of challenges. Here’s how to handle some common ones:
Moving Subjects: Use a faster shutter speed to freeze motion during dances or when capturing active moments. This might mean adjusting your ISO higher or opening up your aperture.
Crowded Spaces: Sororities are often extremely large groups, which can frequently lead to crowdec spaces. That wide lens I mentioned needing above will help out here, but so will developing your confidence in approaching people. The great news? College students LOVE photos! Typically, it’s as simple as walking up and asking “would y’all like a photo?”
5. Post-Event Engagement
After the event, your job as a photographer is not done. Engaging with the fraternity or sorority after delivering the final photos can foster lasting relationships and lead to more bookings.
Prompt Delivery: Deliver the edited photos promptly. Quick delivery times can impress the chapter and increase the likelihood of being invited back. We send sneak peeks the night of the event!
Social Media Sharing: Encourage sharing on social media, which can also serve as free marketing for your services. Request a tag, but don’t be picky about it… and by all means: do NOT watermark your photos. Watermarks tell people you don’t trust them. Let your quality and client experience do the work!
Conclusion
Photographing sorority and fraternity events is as rewarding as it is challenging. It offers photographers the opportunity to not only capture memories but also to become an unofficial part of the community, documenting moments that will be treasured for years to come. With the right preparation, understanding, and engagement, you can turn Greek life photography into a fulfilling and profitable aspect of your photography business. Dive in, respect the culture, and watch your portfolio—and client list—grow! Your next grad season will be busier than ever before!
